It happens all too quickly: You drive over a sharp nail, stone or broken glass and before you know it, your tyre is flat. Thanks to a special sealing technology from leading tyre manufacturers, these worries are a thing of the past. AirStop® tyres contain a viscous mass that seals punctures of up to 5 mm in diameter caused by foreign bodies, thereby preventing a loss of pressure in the tyre. So, you can drive calmly to the nearest Volkswagen Retailer2.

The technology behind AirStop® tyres

What’s behind the innovative sealing technology and how is air prevented from escaping the so-called sealing tyres following a puncture? We show you how it works.

  • Illustration: Nail punctures tyre surface and hits viscous mass – VW AirStop® tyre technology

The inside of the sealing tyre contains a special sealing mass. This dimensionally stable, sticky substance can ensure that punctures are sealed immediately.

  • Illustration: Viscous mass in a tyre encloses puncturing nail – VW AirStop® tyre technology

If a foreign object penetrates the tyre surface, the sealing mass can surround the puncturing item, thereby stopping any air from leaving the tyre – and preventing any change in tyre pressure.

  • Illustration: Nail emerges from a puncture in a tyre, a viscous mass closes the hole – VW AirStop® tyre technology

If the foreign object detaches from the puncture site, the viscous mass is drawn into the hole by the object, thus sealing the puncture channel. In this case, too, the tyre pressure remains stable and you stay mobile.

Our recommendation for you

Whether you use AirStop® or other tyres, it’s important to check them on a regular basis – once or twice a month and before any longer journeys. Keep an eye out for punctures or a possible loss of tyre pressure. Unusual noises, a vibrating sensation or changes in driving behaviour can also indicate that something is wrong with the tyres. Head to the nearest workshop as soon as possible and have your tyres checked. The service employees will take a look at the damage and – if necessary – change your tyres.
