Yes, a stone chip damages the top layer of glass. Even the smallest vibration can cause a crack to form, which can then spread across the entire front windscreen.

That depends on the type of damage. If the chip is in the driver’s field of vision, is less than 10 cm away from the edge of the windscreen and is larger than a 2 euro coin, you are not allowed to continue driving for safety reasons. With smaller chips that are outside the driver’s field of vision, you can continue driving for the time being. However, we recommend contacting a workshop regardless of the type of chip, so the damage can be repaired as soon as possible – for your safety and that of other road users.

In principle, a chip can only be sealed if its diameter is smaller than 5 mm, it’s located at least 10 cm away from the edge of the windscreen and is not in the driver’s field of vision. If the damage is more extensive, the windscreen has to be replaced.
